No judgment. Ever. I promise. I've resisted every creative endeavor you can imagine! There are so many reasons to resist and procrastinate. I'll share here two different forms of resistance I've had to confront.

This first example is insane: I was briefly a student at a tiny art school. The instructor, a jealous old man carrying a razor blade in his pocket to damage students' work and discourage them, told two boys to fix my paintings. Unfortunately, he marched the class into my school studio.

They destroyed every piece while he yelled at me that the only way to paint was his way. He was a one-man wrecking ball. He hated motivated students. Fortunately, I knew what healthy classrooms were like—and soon left that toxic place behind. Picking up a paintbrush again took a long time.

My resistance to writing was silent, subtle, and hard to pinpoint. Before I wrote a word, I worried people wouldn't like or even understand my novels. I wanted them to be well received.

Resistance can come from an aggressive experience or from something inside ourselves that silently pumps the brakes. Suddenly, we find ourselves looking at the computer screen, or finding something—anything—to do instead. We've got to get psyched up.

But there is a reason important projects won't let go. They beckon us forward despite whatever we tell ourselves. It's important. It matters. Your story matters as much as any you've read that impacted you.
